He started his project of building the Palace at the age of 43 and spent his 33 years collecting stones along his postal route. Walking along his mail route in the town of Hauterives in Southern France, Mr Cheval has been carefully choosing the stones he liked. Leaving them on the side and while coming back he was gathering all of them back home. As he held them in his hand, the shape of each single stone inspired that postman, Ferdinand Cheval, to build a grand palace. He started his project in 1879.
