Musée des Confluences
Did it take them about 10 years to build the Musée des Confluences here in Lyon, France? I think it did! Did it take about 200 Euros to have it created? Yes, it did and it did doubled the financial predicitions which had been made at the beginning. But it has finally opened and I think it was worth the wait & effort to launch. I have been there and I am impressed!
The Musée des Confluences is a science centre and anthropology museum and it has been build to tell the story of humankind. The museum has been opened with some temporary and permament exhibitions. They rang from the Earth to life, science and social sciences to technology and they are all housed in one place – Lyon! But where exactly?
Well, the Musée des Confluences is located in the southern part of Lyon where you can actually see the merge of the Rhone and the Saone rivers. That is also the reason why the museum got its name – Confluences. You cannot miss this building as it is very impressive, not big but huge (!) and it looks like a ship from sci fiction movie.
I felt amazing around it and magical inside. Why?
Well, it is simply huge! It has unique shape and size. It has a massive glass hall which leads to the numerous, darkened exhibition rooms The museum covers an impressive 5,000 square meters and contains a unique collection of 2 million objects from every continent.
What did I like the most inside?
So there is a really amazing view of Lyon. The building has 4 floors and the lift which takes you up to the roof on where you can visit a cosy restaurant/cafe, have something to eat or drink and admire beautiful Lyon!
Another thing that impressed me a lot was its construction and the idea of the museum being all in glass. It looks wonderful, the small problem I can see here is on how you can keep it clean. There are too many windows to be cleaned indeed!
I was impressed with the museum’s most significant artifact which is the near complete fossil of a mammoth discovered just 2 kilometres away from the museum some 150 years ago.
And I loved the idea that this museum has broken some rules and I could actually touch authentic artifacts. I think the creators had a good idea of allowing people to touch some of the expositions as I can sense that people are respecting them more and if they are not forbidden things, they actually dont have fun in breaking rules. So all in all, I am sure there will not see any lost or destructions in the artifacts they are showing to visitors.
The only thing I would say they need to work on a little more is to provide more signs the exibitions rooms so visitors can easily find their way. And I also wait for more space to be filled with new exhibitions. Having said so, it really takes a good few hours to go throug the current exibits and shows displayed inside the museum.
So here you are – the new and strong symbol of Lyon has been launched and the city can be proud of its new construction – modern and impressive, the one that meets the expectations for 21st century museum.
So I think we need to put it on the List of the Top Things You Can/Should do in Lyon!
Enjoy your trip to Musee des Confluences!
